The San Francisco Silent Film Festival screens important titles from the silent era, often fully restored and with live music, at the Castro Theatre.


SF INTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVAL

San Francisco International Arts Festival features innovative cross-cultural performances by international artists at Fort Mason Center. Discount tickets $7 – $13.


DOCFEST FILM FESTIVAL

S.F. movie theaters
DocFest is a documentary film festival screening a mix of politics, music, social issues, and youth-oriented subcultures, which also has after-parties.

SOMA

PINOT NOIR TASTING

UNION STREET FESTIVAL

Union Street Festival assigns themes to 6 blocks from Gough to Fillmore (fashion, technology, local, craft, entertainment, and health & fitness). You’ll also find food plus craft beer and wine tasting pavilions. Free.


PIG FEST

June 4, 2017 (4 to 8 p.m.)
Cochon 555 is a culinary competition that features a stand-up tasting of dozens of chef-prepared dishes paired with wine, beer, and spirits at Magnolia Brewing.


UNION SQUARE LIVE

Union Square Live is a series of summer concerts and dances, and even a circus act in Union Square. Free.


CONCERTS IN THE PARK

Golden Gate Park Band plays a variety of music (classical, marches, opera, swing, and show tunes) at Spreckels Temple of Music in Golden Gate Park. Free.


SF JAZZ FESTIVAL

June 6 – 18, 2017
Attend more than 40 big-name shows during the San Francisco Jazz Festival at five venues in the Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco.


A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN

The Broadway musical A Night with Janis Joplin is filled with powerful songs she sang, interesting reflections on her life, and talented friends like Aretha Franklin who influenced her at A.C.T. Discount tickets $15 to $55.


TASTE OF MENDOCINO

Find 200 vendors of food and hippie crafts, a kids’ area, and local bands at the Haight-Ashbury Street Fair on Haight between Ashbury and the park. Free.


ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ TRIATHLON

AND FITNESS FESTIVAL

Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon features a 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the St. Francis Yacht Club, an 18-mile bike ride, and an 8-mile trail run through Golden Gate Recreational Area. The Fitness Festival at Marina Green is free to all.

SF AIDS WALK

Join 20,000 people rain or shine in the 10K AIDS Walk that begins in Sharon Meadow at Golden Gate Park and raises funds for local HIV programs and services. It has an opening ceremony and a post-walk concert.

Bay Area theaters San Francisco Jewish Film Festival screens dramatic and documentary features, television and web series, experimental and animated features and shorts about Jewish history, culture, and identity.


the SF MARATHON

July 23, 2017
The San Francisco Marathon begins Sunday on the Embarcadero, goes across the Golden Gate Bridge, and winds around the entire city. The weekend also has an ultra marathon, 5K, and two half marathons.

ORIGAMI-PALOOZA

Origami-Palooza celebrates the ancient Japanese art of folding paper, with an exhibit of amazing origami, instructors showing new folds for all ages, a table where you can fold paper cranes for the World Tree of Hope in City Hall, and prizes by age for the best paper airplanes and origami at Japan Center.
